Dr. Conrad Edwin Nielsen “Ed”, age 92, of Clayton, IL died on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at his son, Jeff and daughter-in-law’s home in Warrenville, IL.

Dr. Conrad Edwin Nielsen was born on August 27, 1925 to Meiner Christian Nielsen and Johanna Knudsen in Chicago, IL.   He graduated from Lindbloom High School in Chicago, IL and attended Wilson Junior College and Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL.  He then matriculated at the University of Illinois Dental School. He married Esther Jean Mattes on September 9, 1950 in Chicago, IL at the University of Chicago Chapel. They moved to Clayton, IL in 1954 to practice dentistry and start a family.  For the past 7 years, he has been residing in Warrenville, IL with his son Jeff and daughter-in-law, Pam.

He is survived by four sons, Niel (Linda) Nielsen of LaGrange, IL, Dr. Thomas (Dr. Kathryn Bohn, M.D.) Nielsen, M.D. of Bloomington, IL, Dr. Jeffrey (Pamela) Nielsen, M.D. of Warrenville, IL and Joseph Nielsen of Springfield, IL. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Scott 31 (Niel/Linda), Dr. Beth Nielsen, M.D. 28 (Tom/Kathy), Alex 21, Kyler 15 (Jeff/Pam), Zoe 16 (Joe and Shelly).

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Esther and his sister, Joan.

Before completing college and dental school, he served his country as a fighter pilot in the Navy. He practiced dentistry in Clayton, IL for 56 years and retired in 2010 (age 85).  Dr. Nielsen loved his profession and his patients. He enjoyed conversing and getting to know their families and sharing stories about his family.  He had many hobbies and interests including: traveling, farming, fishing, reading.  He was a genuine lifelong learner and teacher.  His greatest joy was his family. He truly loved being with his wife Esther of 58 years, their four sons, their families and children, friends and colleagues.  He was truly a magnificent provider, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed immensely.

Visitation will be held at the Federated Church from 9:00-11:00 AM in Clayton. Funeral Service will follow at the Federated Church in Clayton, IL at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 4th.  Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Clayton Public Library, 211 East Main St, Clayton, IL 62324.
