Larry Gale Akers, Sr., 74, of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, formerly of
Coatsburg, died at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the home.

Born May 8, 1943, in Quincy, Larry was the son of Irvin Wade and Katherine Seeler
Akers. He was married to Carol for 36 years.

Larry was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School in Quincy, IL.  He was employed
as a supervisor at Quincy Compressor for 42 years until his retirement. He
served his country in the United States Navy.  He was a community volunteer,
which included serving on the Quincy Ambulance Board, Coatsburg town board,
 American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, and with the Adams County Ambulance
District for 30 years which was his passion.  He was a friend who loved to host
annual hayrack rides.  He was a devoted grandfather who enjoyed going to his
grandchildrens events and spending time with family.  Larry looked forward to
yearly family reunions.  He loved collecting postage stamps, coins, and photos. 
He was passionate about decorating the cemetery next to his home every year on
Flag Day and assisted in the cemetery upkeep.  

Survivors in addition to his wife are his sister, Tammy Bradshaw (Ralph) of Quincy, IL;
son, Larry G. Akers Jr.(Mary) of LaPrairie, IL; daughter, Brenda Lemke (Rich) of
Parkville, MO; daughter, Andrea Ward (David) of Holt, MO; son, Christopher Akers
of Richmond, VA; daughter, Christina Conley (Pat) of Barry Il; 18 grandchildren,
9 great grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and
cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Alice Seeler; mother, Katherine
Spillman; father, Irvin Wade Akers; Sister, Pamala Hedrick; step father “Pops”
James E. Spillman; step mother, Mary E. Akers; mother in law, Luellen Bucher;
and his son, Curtis Bucher.

Visitation will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 19 at the Christ Lutheran
Church in Quincy followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. by Reverend Gayle
M. Pope.  Military Honors will be conducted following the Memorial
Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Veterans
Home Fifer Building Activities Center located at 1707 N. 12th St. Quincy, IL
62301.
