Lawrence H. Gerdes, 89, of Clayton, died at 4:28 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
Born July 29, 1927, in Golden, Lawrence was a son of Henry and Anna Leenerts Gerdes. He married Waneta May on November 23, 1958, at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling. She survives.
Lawrence attended Elm Grove School. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden but attended the Northside Baptist Church in Clayton. Lawrence served his country in the U.S Army from 1954 until 1956. He was a devoted family man who cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Gerdes was a lifelong farmer in the Clayton area.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Julie Cantrell (Gary), Lori Zimmerman, and Lynn Gerdes, all of Clayton; three grandchildren, Greg Cantrell, St. Louis, MO., Andrea Sowers (Eric), Houston, TX., and Kelli Zimmerman, Clayton; and a brother, Melvin Gerdes (Cindy), Mendon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Dorothy Passley, Vera Oenning, and Velda Beebe; and a brother, LeRoy Gerdes.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Clayton by Pastor Larry Flint. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Horeb Cemetery near Golden.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Clayton.
Memorials may be made to the Northside Baptist Church.
