Terry Dean Mayo, 78, of Dunlap, Illinois formerly of Plymouth and East Peoria died comfortably at home on Monday, April 19, 2021 at 7:14 p.m. after his courageous 19 year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

He was born October 29, 1942 in Peoria IL., the son of Leslie Dale and Gladys Gwendolyn (Liston) Mayo. He married Nancy M. Kolb in 1964 and they had three children: Kris Mayo (Warrenville), Kurt (Heidi McMurren) Mayo (Plymouth), and Kory (Art) Jackson (Germantown Hills). They divorced in 1978. He then married Cynthia M. Fitzpatrick Smith on November 1, 1984 . They survive.

He is also survived by three step daughters, Tricia (Mike) Mason (Dunlap), Jeni Sander (Peoria), Michele Smith (Mapleton), two granddaughters, Lindy and Layne Jackson, seven step-grandchildren, Logan and Avery Mason, Dakota Smith and Chloe Sander, Blake, Kaitlyn and Jamie Vest, sister Vicki(Sterling Kernek) Mayo (Macomb), sister-in-law Patricia Mayo (Plymouth), three nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jerry D. Mayo.

Terry was a 1960 graduate of Industry High School. He served in the US Navy from 1960-1963. He worked at Caterpillar in East Peoria for 30 years as an electrician, retiring in 1993. In 1994, he and Cindy built a home on the farm where he was raised. They lived there until 2009 and then moved to Dunlap. He was a life member of American Legion Post #912. He played fast-pitch softball for many years, was an avid outdoorsman, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. One of his proudest accomplishments was completing the 1981 St. Louis Marathon. He was a devoted St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday April 24, 2021 at the Plymouth Circle Community Center (former Plymouth Methodist Church) in Plymouth, Illinois with Reverend Timothy Wynne officiating. Burial will follow at Scott’s Cemetery near Plymouth where full military rights will be accorded. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the time of services at the PCCC.

Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association.
